Statistically, the US isn’t the safest country in the world. Data points out that violent, physical crime in the US is down in recent years. Yet, in a January 2021 article, Forbes said that many Americans believe that the country is becoming more violent than ever. High-profile incidents like mobs rioting at the US Capitol (on January 6, 2021) only underscore those fears.

Property crime is more common than violent crime. In 2019, the FBI reported 2,109 property crimes per 100,000 population. In the first half of 2020, it found a 15 per cent increase in murders, a five per cent increase in aggravated assaults, and an eight per cent decrease in property crime. The violent crime rate was at 381 incidents per 100,000 people.
