It’s official. Again. The UAE has once again been ranked among the world’s top nations for the quality of life that it offers its citizens and foreign residents. Compiled by Numbeo, a database of user-contributed data about cities and countries worldwide, the UAE ranked at No. 23 among the 83 countries that the Quality of Life Index assessed for its 2021 mid-year rankings.

Switzerland topped the mid-year index followed by Denmark and the Netherlands. European nations dominated the Top 10, grabbing eight of the 10 leading positions. Australia (#7) and New Zealand (#9) were the only non-European nations in the Top 10.

The UAE ranked at No. 23 among the 83 countries that Numbeo’s Quality of Life Index assessed for its 2021 mid-year rankings

The index calculated the rankings based on a range of parameters, including purchasing power, safety, healthcare, cost of living, property prices-to-income ratio, traffic commute time, pollution and climate.

High quality of life is the biggest reason why not just professionals, but also retirees choose the UAE. The UAE ranked among the Top 10 in the world on Safety (#2, right after GCC peer Qatar), property prices-to-income ratio (#5), climate (#5), and purchasing power (#8).

With significantly better scores than the UAE’s on traffic commute time and pollution sub-indices, GCC peer Oman ranked at No. 14 in the overall index, emerging as the surprise regional leader in quality of life. The other GCC nations to feature in the rankings were Qatar (#27), Saudi Arabia (#34), Kuwait (#55). Bahrain wasn’t listed in the 83-nation rankings.

At No. 83, Nigeria made up the bottom of the rankings and was followed (in the reverse order) by Iran, Bangladesh, Sri Lank and Kenya.

The UAE was ranked among the top 10 countries worldwide in wellbeing indicators of a 2018 World Poll, which tracked the opinions of people in more than 160 countries on what matters most to them.

In that survey, the UAE was ranked first globally on five sub-indices: Availability of Quality Healthcare, Satisfaction with Government Efforts to Preserve the Environment, Full-time Employment Ratio and the Payroll to Population Index.

The emirate of Dubai has become a key expat destination not just in the region but across the world – and it isn’t down to just a fast recovering economy and business. Several global surveys and indices list Dubai and UAE’s capital Abu Dhabi among the world’s best cities for people to live, work – and retire.
