The Global Power City Index ranked Dubai as the 14th most ‘magnetic’ destination for people, capital and business. GPCI 2021 ranked 48 major cities across the world on to their ‘magnetism’ or the ability to attract people, capital and enterprises from around the world.

The Global Power City Index report compares the cities on 70 indicators across six primary parameters: Economy, Research and Development, Cultural Interaction, Liveability, Environment, and Accessibility.

Dubai scored impressively in the economic robustness, cultural interaction, liveability, accessibility and environment but scored low on research and development. Most major cities have adapted workstyle flexibility, the Index shows.

“The GPCI-2021 did not show any significant changes in the top cities, but the citywide lockdowns, travel restrictions, behavioural restrictions, and changes in work styles associated with the Covid-19 [pandemic] since early 2020 affected various indicators. This resulted in a marked impact on the dynamics of world cities,” said the report.

Global Power City Index

The index is published annually by the Tokyo-based Institute for Urban Strategies at the Mori Memorial Foundation. The index was first published in 2008. Dubai ranked at No. 23 in 2017 when it appeared on the index for the first time. It improved its ranking to No. 19 in 2019 and to No. 17 in GPCI 2020.

The index was first published in 2008.

The city-state of Dubai, the only destination from the Arab world Middle East region, has now entered the Top 15, maintaining its edge in the post-pandemic world. Dubai was earlier this year ranked as the world’s third-best city for expats to live and work in.

London was the top-ranked city for the ninth consecutive year. It was followed by New York, Tokyo, Paris and Singapore in the Top 5. The GPCI-2021 Yearbook is scheduled to be released in January 2022 in both Japanese and English.
