Dubai ushered in the New Year with a scintillating display of fireworks at multiple locations across the city. In the UAE’s year of the 50th, the country took all precautions to ring in a socially-distanced 2022. Even the heavy rains on the last day of the year could not dampen the festive spirit. Citizens, residents and visitors revelled in festive gear – and masks.

Dubai’s Burj Khalifa fireworks were as mesmerising as ever, in keeping with the standards that the world’s tallest tower has set for itself. The pyrotechnics were accompanied by a spectacular light show, throwing up spectacular images of Dubai that are now annually beamed across the world on New Year’s Eve.

In fact, at 0000 hours, pyrotechnic displays were triggered at several locations across Dubai, from Expo 2020 Dubai to Global Village, from La Mer, Al Seef, to Burj Al Arab and all the way to Ain Dubai and Bluewaters Island

The fireworks display at Burj Al Arab was exceptional, offering a picture-perfect end to 2021. The fireworks at the world’s only ‘seven-star’ hotel were accompanied by a musical line-up for the hotel’s guests.

Expo 2020 Dubai unites the world

The highlight of Expo 2020 Dubai’s New Year’s Eve proceedings was a magical ball drop. It rivalled that of the famous event in New York’s Times Square. The ball drop welcomed 2022 with a glittering flourish at Al Wasl Plaza at 0000 UAE time. It was accompanied by two fireworks displays that lit up the night sky.

The incandescent crystal ball was launched from the top of Al Wasl Plaza’s illuminated dome. The dome serves as a symbol of hope foretelling a more optimistic future ahead.

The NYE celebrations at the Expo 2020 Dubai started much earlier, though. Different country pavilions at the huge, 438-hectare site of Expo 2020 erupted in celebrations at different times. Several pavilions heralded the New Year in unison with their home nations. New Zealand, Samoa and Tonga kicked off the merriment as they ushered in 2022 at 3 pm Dubai time.

Ain Dubai, the world’s largest and tallest observation wheel, hosted a drone show to illuminate the sky above the waterfront. It also hosted a spectacular light show and fireworks display.

Ain Dubai, the world’s largest and tallest observation wheel, hosted a drone show to illuminate the sky above the waterfront besides a spectacular light show and fireworks display.

In addition, Global Village hosted eight different fireworks shows.

Seamlessly connecting the city, the Dubai Metro ran continuously throughout December 31 and into the New Year, ensuring residents and visitors enjoy the world-class experiences on offer.
