Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced that foreigners holding a Golden Visa can get a Dubai driving licence without taking any driving classes. However, Golden Visa holders will still need to clear the knowledge and driving tests to qualify, said RTA.

“Present your previous driving licence approved in your country and issue a new one from RTA at the driving institutes after passing the knowledge and road tests,” the authority tweeted. Golden Visa-holders need to present the following documents:

  • Original Emirates ID
  • Copy of the previous valid driving licence, and
  • Knowledge test and road test results.

The UAE introduced a long-term residency option through Golden Visas in 2019. Such visas enable foreigners to live, work and study in the country without the need for an Emirati or corporate sponsor. They also allow the holders to fully own their businesses on the mainland, without the need for an Emirati partner.

The UAE driving licence is valid in more than 50 countries. UAE residents belonging to certain nationalities can swap their home countrys driving licence to that of the UAE’s.

These countries include the UK, US, France, Japan, Germany, Italy, Belgium, Netherlands, Switzerland, Denmark, Greece, Spain, Sweden, Austria, Ireland, Norway, Turkey, Canada, Poland, South Korea, Finland, South Africa, and Australia.

What is a UAE Golden Visa?

The UAE introduced a long-term residency option through Golden Visas in 2019. Such visas enable foreigners to live, work and study in the country without the need for an Emirati or corporate sponsor. They also allow their holders to fully own their businesses on the mainland, without the need for an Emirati partner.

These visas are issued for a renewable term of five or 10 years. By November 2021, more than 44,000 Dubai residents had obtained the Golden Visa. Investors, entrepreneurs, special talents and researchers in various fields of science, and bright students are eligible to receive the visa.

The recent regulations expanded the Golden Visa eligibility to include more professionals. These include managers, CEOs, and specialists in science, engineering, healthcare, education, business management and technology. Additionally, the process to apply for long-term residency was eased for highly skilled residents, investors, entrepreneurs, scientists, pioneers, and outstanding students.
