Canada follows a system of universal healthcare for its citizens and permanent residents, who may apply for public health insurance. Those with insurance don’t have to pay for most healthcare services. But it isn’t free — it is paid for through taxes. Canadians, in general, pay higher taxes for their social safety net, which includes healthcare. The average family is expected to pay $12,935 per year for public healthcare through taxes.
