Canada’s crime rates and the severity of crimes committed has been on a decline

on

Canada is friendly, peace-loving and secure with low crime rates. Crime, in general, has declined since 2000 with the 2018 crime rate around 30 per cent lower than peak levels in 2003. Property crime and violent crime have followed this general trend with rates dropping 39 and 23 per cent, respectively. The severity of crimes committed has also been on the decline.

In 2018, Canada’s homicide rate was 1.76 homicides per 100,000 residents – three times lower than its southern neighbour, the US. Burglaries and motor vehicle thefts have declined to the point of being on a par with the US or lower overall. In 2020, Canada’s crime rate (Criminal Code violations excluding traffic) was 5,874 incidents per 100,000 population.
